Which company manufactured the first Android smartphone, the HTC Dream?

The story behind the answer

HTC manufactured the first Android smartphone, the HTC Dream.

The HTC Dream was developed and manufactured by HTC and released in 2008. In the United States, T-Mobile sold it as the T-Mobile G1, while other markets used names including HTC Dream and Era G1. It was the first commercially released smartphone to run the Linux-based Android operating system.

HTC officially announced the device on September 23, 2008, and T-Mobile launched it in the United States on October 20. The phone combined a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen with a slide-out five-row QWERTY keyboard and a clickable trackball. Its original software was Android 1.0, which included early versions of Gmail, Maps, YouTube, browser tools, notifications, and the Android Market.

Google supplied the Android software and collaborated closely on the device, but Google was not the manufacturer. Motorola and Samsung later became major Android hardware makers, yet neither built the first Android phone. The HTC Dream's hardware design helped demonstrate Android on a real consumer device and gave the new platform its first public foothold in the smartphone market.
