Which company manufactured the Apollo Lunar Module?

The story behind the answer

Which company manufactured the Apollo Lunar Module? The answer is Grumman. Grumman was the primary contractor responsible for designing and building the Apollo Lunar Module, the spacecraft that carried astronauts between lunar orbit and the Moon's surface.

NASA awarded Grumman the Lunar Module contract on November 7, 1962, after the agency selected lunar-orbit rendezvous as its mission strategy. That approach required a separate vehicle to descend from lunar orbit, land, and then launch an ascent stage back to orbit while the command module remained in space.

Grumman assembled the spacecraft at its facility in Bethpage, New York, with major systems supplied by subcontractors. Bell Aerosystems built the ascent engine, while Rocketdyne supplied the descent engine. North American Aviation built the Apollo command and service module, which is why it is sometimes confused with the Lunar Module's manufacturer. Grumman built 13 lunar modules; six landed astronauts on the Moon, and one served as Apollo 13's lifeboat.
