Which company made the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures?

Playmates Toys made the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures.

Playmates launched the first major toy line in 1988, following the success of the 1987 animated series. The figures helped establish a merchandising model that became closely associated with the franchise: many versions of the core turtles were released alongside allies, villains, vehicles, and imaginative accessories.

The toys were not simply replicas of the darker comic-book characters. Their bright designs, exaggerated features, and large supporting cast reflected the energetic style of the cartoon and helped make the brand appealing to children.

The success of Playmates’ line had a major effect on the franchise’s growth. It also contributed to the public’s lasting familiarity with cartoon-specific characters and variants that did not originate in the earliest Mirage comics.
