Which company later became Dole Food Company?

The story behind the answer

The Standard Fruit Company later became part of the corporate lineage that produced Dole Food Company. The company was established in the United States in 1924 by the Vaccaro brothers, after their earlier banana-importing business began shipping fruit from Honduras to New Orleans.

Standard Fruit expanded beyond importing. It built plantations, transport networks, refrigeration infrastructure, and shipping operations in Central America. In 1926, it adopted the name Standard Fruit & Steamship Company, reflecting the importance of maritime transport to the banana trade.

Between 1964 and 1968, Castle & Cooke acquired Standard Fruit. Castle & Cooke also controlled the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, founded by James Dole. In 1991, Castle & Cooke was renamed Dole Food Company, linking Standard Fruit’s operations to the Dole name.

The company is sometimes confused with United Fruit Company, the predecessor of Chiquita Brands. Both were major banana companies and both influenced Central American politics, but Standard Fruit followed a different corporate path into the Dole organization.
