Which company is the world’s largest publicly traded oil producer by production capacity?

The story behind the answer

Saudi Aramco is the world’s largest publicly traded oil producer by production capacity.

Saudi Aramco, officially Saudi Arabian Oil Company, manages extensive petroleum resources in Saudi Arabia and operates across exploration, production, refining, chemicals, and distribution. Its scale comes from the enormous hydrocarbon reserves and production infrastructure of the kingdom.

The company was partially listed on the Saudi Exchange in 2019. The offering made Aramco one of the most valuable listed corporations and one of the largest initial public offerings in financial history.

Aramco is not the same as Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy or its Public Investment Fund. The Saudi government remains the dominant shareholder. Unlike integrated international oil majors such as ExxonMobil and Chevron, Aramco’s distinctive position comes from its exceptional access to Saudi Arabia’s giant conventional oil reserves.
