TSMC is the world’s largest contract chipmaker and is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, was founded in 1987 by Morris Chang. It pioneered the dedicated foundry model, manufacturing chips designed by other companies rather than primarily selling chips under its own consumer brand.
This separation allowed firms such as Nvidia, Apple, and AMD to design processors while using TSMC’s manufacturing facilities. TSMC operates advanced fabrication plants and has expanded internationally, while its main base remains in Taiwan.
TSMC is closely linked to market-capitalization rankings because its production capacity supports many of the world’s most valuable technology companies. It is not the same type of business as Nvidia: Nvidia mainly designs processors, while TSMC manufactures chips for customers. The company’s English name is an abbreviation of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited.
