Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, was founded in 1987 by Morris Chang in Taiwan. It pioneered the dedicated foundry model, manufacturing chips designed by other companies instead of competing with customers by selling its own branded processors.
That business model made TSMC a crucial supplier for companies such as Nvidia, Apple, and AMD. Its advanced process technologies are used for powerful processors in smartphones, data centers, personal computers, and AI systems.
TSMC’s market capitalization reflects its strategic role, manufacturing scale, technology leadership, and exposure to global demand for advanced chips. It is different from Nvidia: Nvidia is primarily a chip designer, while TSMC operates fabrication facilities that manufacture chips for customers.
