Amazon is the parent company of Amazon.com and trades under the stock symbol AMZN.
Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 and began as an online bookstore. It expanded into a broad retail marketplace, cloud computing, digital entertainment, devices, advertising, and logistics.
Amazon Web Services, or AWS, became a major part of the company’s business. AWS provides computing, storage, database, and other infrastructure services to organizations around the world, adding a large technology-services operation to Amazon’s retail roots.
Amazon’s market capitalization reflects investors’ valuation of the entire public company, not only its online store. The company first passed a $1 trillion market value in September 2018, joining a small group of technology giants at that level.
