Alphabet is the parent corporation of Google and became one of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization after its 2015 restructuring.
Alphabet was created in 2015 as part of a corporate reorganization. Google became a subsidiary, while Alphabet became the publicly traded parent for Google and several other businesses, including research and investment projects.
The restructuring separated Google’s core internet businesses from ventures such as life sciences, autonomous vehicles, and other “Other Bets.” Investors continued to value Alphabet largely through Google Search, advertising, YouTube, and the Google Cloud business.
Alphabet is sometimes confused with Google because Google remains its best-known subsidiary. The parent company’s stock-market value, however, belongs to Alphabet Inc. Alphabet’s Class A, Class B, and Class C shares have different voting rights but represent the same corporate group.
