Berkshire Hathaway is the company associated with Warren Buffett that has its headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska, and ranks among the world’s most valuable companies.
Buffett moved to Omaha as a child and built Berkshire into a diversified holding company through acquisitions and long-term investments. The company’s headquarters remain in Omaha, even though its businesses operate across insurance, rail transportation, utilities, energy, manufacturing, retail, and services.
Berkshire is especially associated with Buffett’s value-investing approach: purchasing businesses or shares in companies that he considers financially strong and reasonably priced, then holding them for long periods. Charlie Munger was Buffett’s longtime business partner and served as Berkshire’s vice chairman until his death in 2023.
Berkshire is not the same as an asset manager such as BlackRock. It owns operating subsidiaries and makes investments, while asset managers primarily manage money for clients.
