Which company invited Georgia O'Keeffe to Hawaii in 1939 to paint plants for an advertising project?

The story behind the answer

The Hawaiian Pineapple Company invited Georgia O'Keeffe to Hawaii in 1939 to paint plants for an advertising project. The company later became part of the Dole Food Company, but the invitation came from the earlier Hawaiian Pineapple Company.

O'Keeffe spent about nine weeks in Hawaii, visiting Oahu, Maui, and the island of Hawaii. She was expected to produce images connected with the company's pineapple business and other tropical subjects.

During the trip she painted flowers, plants, and landscapes, including works associated with banana leaves and papaya trees. The company wanted a pineapple painting, but O'Keeffe did not paint one until after returning to New Mexico, when it sent her a pineapple plant.

The Hawaii series is distinctive because it records O'Keeffe working outside the desert and Southwestern environments for which she is best known. It also shows how commercial commissions could intersect with her independent visual interests.
