Nvidia gained about $277 billion in market capitalization in a single day on February 22, 2024.
The record-setting jump followed Nvidia’s quarterly results and outlook, which showed extraordinary demand for its data-center chips used in artificial-intelligence systems. Investors responded by bidding up Nvidia shares sharply, adding roughly $277 billion to the company’s market value in one session.
Nvidia designs graphics processing units and related platforms. Although GPUs were originally associated with computer graphics and gaming, they became central to training and running many modern AI models. That shift transformed Nvidia’s growth expectations and pushed it rapidly upward in global market-cap rankings.
The increase was not $277 billion in new cash received by Nvidia. It represented the change in the quoted value of all outstanding shares. The company’s market capitalization could therefore move by hundreds of billions even though only a fraction of its shares changed hands that day.
