Tesla, founded in 2003, became the first automaker to surpass US$1 trillion in market capitalization.
Tesla crossed the US$1 trillion threshold on October 25, 2021, after its share price surged following a major vehicle-order announcement. The milestone made Tesla the first car manufacturer to receive a stock-market valuation above one trillion US dollars.
Tesla’s rise was driven by rapid growth in electric-vehicle sales, expanding production, and expectations about batteries, software, charging, and autonomous-driving technology. The company’s best-known vehicles included the Model 3 and Model Y, which brought Tesla’s products to a broader market than its earlier premium models.
The record did not mean Tesla produced more cars than every competitor. Traditional automakers generally had much larger manufacturing volumes and longer histories. Market capitalization measures investors’ valuation of future earnings and growth, so it can differ sharply from current production, revenue, or physical assets.
