Walmart, founded in 1962 as Wal-Mart, became the world’s largest company by revenue.
Sam Walton opened the first Wal-Mart Discount City store in Rogers, Arkansas, on July 2, 1962. The business emphasized low prices and high sales volume, first expanding through smaller towns before developing a nationwide network of supercenters. Its legal name was changed from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. to Walmart Inc. in 2018.
Walmart operates supermarkets, discount department stores, and warehouse clubs in multiple countries. Its scale comes from enormous retail sales, a large supply chain, and a major e-commerce operation. Revenue rankings and market-cap rankings measure different things: revenue records sales over a period, while market capitalization reflects the stock market value of a company’s shares. Walmart can therefore lead revenue tables even when technology or energy companies rank higher by market value.
