Apple was the first company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization, touching the milestone in January 2022.
Apple briefly reached the level during intraday trading on 3 January 2022, when its share price rose to about $182.86. The figure was calculated from the company’s share price and approximately 16.4 billion outstanding shares. Because the stock later retreated, the milestone was initially an intraday valuation rather than a sustained closing value.
The achievement came less than four years after Apple first reached $1 trillion and less than two years after it reached $2 trillion. Investors were pricing in continued strength in the iPhone business, expanding services revenue, and the company’s large cash-generating ecosystem.
A market-cap milestone does not mean Apple had $3 trillion in cash or physical assets. It represented the market value assigned to all of its publicly traded equity at that moment. Apple’s milestone preceded later $3 trillion valuations for Microsoft and Nvidia.
