Microsoft first reached a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2019.
Microsoft crossed the threshold during trading on April 25, 2019. The milestone followed a major transformation from a software company centered on personal computers into a diversified technology business with cloud computing, enterprise software, gaming, search, and professional networking.
Microsoft Azure was particularly important to the company’s renewed growth. Its cloud platform competes with Amazon Web Services and supports computing, storage, databases, artificial intelligence, and other services for organizations.
Microsoft had previously been one of the world’s most valuable companies, but its market value accelerated under chief executive Satya Nadella, who became CEO in 2014. As with all market-cap milestones, the $1 trillion figure depended on the share price and shares outstanding; it did not mean Microsoft had $1 trillion in cash or revenue.
