Apple first reached a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2018 after reporting quarterly results.
The milestone came on August 2, 2018, following a strong earnings report and a rise in Apple’s share price. Because market capitalization is the share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding, the precise threshold depended on Apple’s share count as well as the stock price.
Apple had used stock splits during its history, including a seven-for-one split in 2014. Stock splits change the number of shares and the price per share but do not, by themselves, change the company’s total market value. This is why historical share prices must be interpreted alongside split adjustments.
The trillion-dollar record was later followed by Apple’s $2 trillion milestone in 2020 and $3 trillion milestone in 2022. Amazon also became a trillion-dollar company in 2018, but Apple crossed the threshold first.
