Which company first closed above a $3 trillion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

Apple was the first company to close above a $3 trillion market capitalization.

Apple finished a trading session above $3 trillion in June 2023, after having first touched that level intraday in January 2022. A closing milestone is measured using the final share price of the session, making it different from briefly crossing a level during the day.

The company’s valuation reflected investor confidence in its global ecosystem of hardware, software, and services. Apple’s enormous customer base and high-margin services helped support its position among the world’s most valuable listed companies.

Market capitalization does not mean Apple held $3 trillion in cash. It is the combined market value of outstanding shares and can rise or fall even when a company’s operations change little in the short term.
