Microsoft first briefly surpassed Apple as the world’s most valuable public company by market capitalization in January 2024.
Microsoft moved ahead of Apple during January 2024 trading as investors responded to strong demand for cloud computing and artificial-intelligence services. Its market capitalization fluctuated around Apple’s, so the ranking changed more than once as share prices moved.
Microsoft’s modern valuation reflects businesses far beyond its original Windows software franchise. Azure cloud computing, Microsoft 365 subscriptions, enterprise software, gaming, and the company’s investment in OpenAI all contributed to the market’s assessment of its future growth.
The phrase “most valuable company” in this context means the highest market capitalization among publicly traded companies. It does not necessarily mean the highest annual revenue, largest workforce, or greatest total assets. Saudi Aramco and other firms may also rank highly, but their share availability and market prices differ from those of U.S.-listed technology companies.
