Which company distributed Yo-kai Watch: The Movie in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Yo-kai Watch: The Movie was distributed in Japan by Toho. The film premiered there on December 20, 2014, under the Japanese title Eiga Yōkai Wotchi: Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan!, or Yo-kai Watch the Movie: It’s the Secret of Birth, Meow!

Toho handled the Japanese distribution, while OLM was the production company. The movie was directed by Shigeharu Takahashi and Shinji Ushiro and adapted material from the Yo-kai Watch franchise created by Level-5.

The distributor is easy to confuse with other major Japanese film companies such as Shochiku and Toei. International releases used different distributors: Wild Bunch handled France, 01 Distribution handled Italy, and Universal Pictures distributed the film in some other countries. Those overseas arrangements do not change the answer for the Japanese release.

The film became a major domestic success. It earned ¥1.629 billion during its opening weekend and eventually grossed ¥7.8 billion in Japan, making it one of the franchise’s biggest early theatrical events.
