PepsiCo acquired SodaStream in 2018 to add the sparkling-water maker to its portfolio.
PepsiCo announced the acquisition in August 2018 and completed it later that year. The deal valued SodaStream at approximately $3.2 billion, including debt, and gave PepsiCo a major presence in at-home carbonated-water systems.
SodaStream sells reusable machines that carbonate tap water, along with flavor concentrates and gas cylinders. Its business model differs from traditional packaged soft drinks because consumers make sparkling beverages at home rather than buying every serving in a bottle or can.
The acquisition reflected PepsiCo’s interest in alternatives to conventional sugary soft drinks and single-use packaging. It is separate from PepsiCo’s earlier acquisitions of Tropicana, Quaker Oats, and Gatorade-related assets.
