Which company did Nvidia acquire in 2020 to strengthen its position in data-center networking?

The story behind the answer

Nvidia acquired Mellanox Technologies in 2020 to strengthen its position in data-center networking.

Mellanox Technologies was an Israeli-American semiconductor company specializing in high-speed networking products, including InfiniBand and Ethernet equipment. Nvidia announced the acquisition in 2019, and the transaction was completed in April 2020 for approximately $7 billion.

The deal gave Nvidia networking technology that complemented its graphics processors and helped it offer more complete systems for high-performance computing and artificial-intelligence workloads. In modern data centers, moving data efficiently between processors can be as important as the processors themselves.

Nvidia later integrated Mellanox products into its data-center platform and used the Mellanox name for networking hardware and software. Nvidia also agreed to acquire Arm Holdings in 2020, but that proposed transaction was abandoned in 2022 after regulatory opposition, making Arm a separate company.
