Which company did Intel acquire in 2017 for approximately $15.3 billion to expand its autonomous-driving business?

The story behind the answer

Intel acquired Mobileye in 2017 for approximately $15.3 billion to expand its autonomous-driving business.

Mobileye was founded in Jerusalem in 1999 by Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram. It developed computer-vision systems and driver-assistance technology, including cameras and software designed to identify lanes, vehicles, pedestrians, and road hazards. Intel announced the acquisition in March 2017 and completed it in August.

At the time, the purchase was Intel’s largest ever and one of the biggest acquisitions of an Israeli technology company. Intel positioned Mobileye as a core part of its strategy for advanced driver-assistance systems and self-driving vehicles. Mobileye continued operating as a distinct business within Intel.

The deal is sometimes confused with Intel’s purchase of autonomous-driving start-up Moovit, announced in 2020. Moovit was a separate, much smaller acquisition. Mobileye later returned to public markets in 2022 through an initial public offering, while Intel remained its controlling shareholder.
