Dell acquired EMC in 2016 in a deal valued at about $67 billion.
Dell announced the transaction in October 2015, and it closed on September 7, 2016. The combination joined Dell’s personal-computer and server operations with EMC’s strength in data storage and enterprise infrastructure.
The deal was structured as a cash-and-stock transaction and was widely described as the largest technology-sector acquisition at the time. EMC’s ownership stake in VMware was also a major part of the transaction’s strategic appeal, although VMware remained a separately traded public company.
After completion, the combined company was called Dell Technologies. EMC should not be confused with VMware: EMC was the parent company being acquired, while VMware was a separate software company in which EMC held a controlling interest. Dell Technologies later sold its VMware stake in 2021.
