Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware on November 22, 2023.
The transaction brought VMware’s virtualization and cloud-software business into Broadcom, which had previously been known mainly for semiconductors and infrastructure technology. Broadcom announced the agreement in May 2022, and the deal received regulatory approval in several jurisdictions before closing.
VMware was founded in 1998 and became a major provider of virtualization software, allowing multiple virtual machines to run on one physical computer. Its products became particularly important in enterprise data centers and private clouds.
A common mix-up is confusing this acquisition with Broadcom’s earlier purchase of CA Technologies or Symantec’s enterprise-security business. Those were separate transactions. VMware’s acquisition was especially significant because it expanded Broadcom’s software operations and changed the company’s business profile beyond chip manufacturing.
