Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023 for approximately $69 billion, its largest deal ever.
VMware was founded in 1998 and became a leading provider of virtualization software. Its technology allowed organizations to run multiple virtual machines on a single physical server, helping businesses use computing resources more efficiently and manage data centers.
Broadcom announced its agreement to acquire VMware in May 2022. After regulatory reviews, the transaction was completed on November 22, 2023, with an enterprise value of approximately $69 billion. Broadcom said the acquisition would expand its infrastructure-software business.
The purchase is distinct from Broadcom’s earlier acquisition of CA Technologies and its 2019 purchase of Symantec’s enterprise-security business. VMware continued operating as a software-focused business under Broadcom, while some products and business units were reorganized after the closing.
