Which company developed the Pokémon series of role-playing video games?

The story behind the answer

Game Freak developed the Pokémon series of role-playing video games.

The Japanese studio was founded in 1989 by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. Before Pokémon, Game Freak began as a video-game magazine and later created several unrelated games, including Quinty, released outside Japan as Mendel Palace.

Game Freak developed the core Pokémon games, while Nintendo published them and helped distribute the franchise. Creatures also became an important partner, particularly in Pokémon-related business and trading-card development. The Pokémon Company was established later to manage the broader brand.

This division of responsibilities is a common source of mix-ups. Nintendo is the best-known publisher and owner associated with Pokémon, but Game Freak is the principal developer of the main role-playing-game series.
