OpenAI developed the GPT-4 language model used in Microsoft’s early Copilot products.
OpenAI announced GPT-4 on March 14, 2023. It is a multimodal model that can accept text and image inputs in supported settings and generate text outputs. Microsoft incorporated OpenAI models into products branded as Copilot, including services aimed at workplace productivity and software development.
OpenAI was founded in 2015 as an artificial-intelligence research organization. Microsoft became a major partner and investor, providing cloud infrastructure through Azure and integrating OpenAI technology into several products.
GPT-4 is not the same as Copilot: GPT-4 is a model, while Copilot is a collection of user-facing products and features. The partnership helped make generative AI a major technology-market theme and contributed to intense investor interest in companies supplying the necessary cloud and semiconductor infrastructure.
