Game Freak developed the first Pokémon role-playing games for Nintendo. The studio created Pocket Monsters Red and Green, released for the Game Boy in Japan in 1996.
Game Freak grew from a magazine founded by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. Tajiri designed the core concept, while Sugimori helped establish the creatures’ artwork and visual style. Nintendo published the games and provided important support during development.
Creatures later became another major company associated with the Pokémon property, especially through its work on 3D assets and the trading card game. That relationship can cause confusion, but Creatures did not develop the original role-playing games. Game Freak has continued to develop the main series across Nintendo handhelds and consoles.
