Which company developed the diabetes drug Mounjaro?
Answer
Eli Lilly
Answer
Eli Lilly
Eli Lilly developed Mounjaro, the brand name for the drug tirzepatide.
Mounjaro was approved in the United States in 2022 for improving blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. Tirzepatide activates receptors for both GIP and GLP-1, two hormones involved in glucose regulation and appetite.
The same active ingredient is marketed as Zepbound for chronic weight management. Mounjaro and Zepbound are therefore different brand names for tirzepatide in different approved uses, not two unrelated molecules.
Eli Lilly’s success with diabetes and obesity medicines contributed to major investor interest and helped make the company one of the most valuable pharmaceutical businesses. Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide products are a major competing treatment class, but semaglutide is chemically different from tirzepatide.
