Eli Lilly developed Mounjaro, whose active ingredient is tirzepatide.
Eli Lilly and Company introduced Mounjaro in the United States in 2022 for adults with type 2 diabetes, subject to medical guidance and regulatory labeling. Tirzepatide acts on both the GIP and GLP-1 hormone pathways, helping regulate blood sugar and appetite. The same medicine is marketed as Zepbound in the United States for chronic weight management.
The company’s growth in diabetes and obesity medicines helped make Eli Lilly one of the world’s most valuable pharmaceutical companies by market capitalization. Its earlier medicines include insulin products, Prozac, and Humalog.
Mounjaro and Zepbound are brand names for different approved uses, so they should not be treated as separate active ingredients. Eli Lilly is also distinct from Novo Nordisk, the Danish company behind Ozempic and Wegovy.
