Crytek developed the 2016 virtual-reality climbing game The Climb. The game places players on dramatic cliffs and other vertical environments, using VR motion controls to grab handholds, reach upward, and navigate routes.
The Climb was created by Crytek, the German video-game developer best known for the Far Cry and Crysis series and for its CryEngine technology. Oculus Studios published the game, but publishing and development were separate roles; this is a common source of confusion.
The game was designed for Oculus Rift and used head tracking and motion controllers to make climbing feel physically interactive. Its environments emphasized scale and spectacle, including rocky landscapes and high-altitude views.
The Climb later received a follow-up, The Climb 2, which expanded the concept with new urban and natural locations. The original game is therefore distinct from its sequel and from other VR climbing titles such as Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey, which is an exploration adventure rather than a dedicated climbing game.
