Which company developed the 1991 virtual-reality arcade system Virtuality?
Answer
W Industries
Answer
W Industries
W Industries developed the 1991 virtual-reality arcade system Virtuality.
W Industries was a British company founded by Jonathan Waldern. It developed Virtuality arcade machines, which became publicly associated with commercial VR entertainment in the early 1990s. The systems used headsets and specialized controls to place players inside computer-generated environments.
Virtuality machines appeared in arcades and entertainment venues in several forms, including sit-down and stand-up configurations. The company’s products were technologically ambitious for their period, even though their graphics and tracking were much more limited than those of modern consumer headsets.
The name Virtuality can refer both to the company’s arcade technology and to the company itself. It is not the same as Nintendo’s Virtual Boy, a 1995 home console with a monochrome stereoscopic display. Virtuality also predates today’s major consumer platforms from Oculus, HTC, Sony, and Meta.
