Which company developed Google Earth VR?

The story behind the answer

Google developed Google Earth VR, an immersive virtual-reality version of its digital-globe software.

Google Earth VR launched in 2016 for the HTC Vive. It allowed users to explore satellite imagery, aerial photography, landmarks, cities, and terrain from a room-scale virtual environment. Users could zoom from a view of Earth down to individual locations and move around the globe using motion controllers.

The product built on Google Earth, which had been available as desktop software since 2005. Google Earth VR was not a separate mapping database; it presented much of Google’s existing geographic imagery and 3D data through a VR interface.

The application became notable because it showed that VR could support exploration and education, not only games. Google later released a version for Oculus Rift, expanding access beyond the HTC Vive platform.
