Varien created the shopping cart software framework Magento.
Varien, a web-development company founded by Roy Rubin and Yoav Kutner, developed Magento as an open-source e-commerce platform. The first public beta appeared in 2007, and Magento 1.0 was released in 2008.
Magento became popular because merchants and developers could customize its catalog, checkout, product, and order-management features. Its open-source model helped create a large extension and developer ecosystem.
The company later changed its name to Magento, Inc. eBay acquired Magento in 2011, and Adobe announced its acquisition of Magento Commerce in 2018. That later corporate history is separate from the identity of the original creator, Varien.
