Google created the programming language Go, first announced publicly in 2009.
Robert Griesemer, Rob Pike, and Ken Thompson designed Go at Google. They wanted a compiled language with fast build times, straightforward syntax, modern support for concurrent programs, and a toolchain suitable for large software projects.
The language was publicly announced in November 2009 and released as an open-source project. Go later became especially associated with cloud infrastructure, networking services, command-line tools, and container-related software.
Go is sometimes confused with JavaScript because both are widely used in web development, but they are different languages with different designs. It is also commonly called Golang, a nickname that helps distinguish it in web searches because “Go” is such a short and common word.
