The Palo Alto garage where Hewlett-Packard was founded in 1939 is called HP Garage.
Bill Hewlett and David Packard began developing electronic instruments there after meeting as Stanford University students. Their first major product was an audio oscillator, an electronic test instrument used by engineers and studios.
The modest structure became a celebrated symbol of Silicon Valley’s garage-startup mythology. It was located at 367 Addison Avenue, beside the house where the founders lived. The company itself was incorporated later, in 1947, and became Hewlett-Packard Company in 1939 through the founders’ informal coin toss.
People sometimes confuse HP Garage with the garage associated with Apple’s early history. Apple’s frequently cited garage was the Los Altos home of Steve Jobs’ parents, while HP Garage is specifically linked to Hewlett and Packard’s founding.
