Apple created the original iPod, which Steve Jobs unveiled on October 23, 2001.
The first iPod was a portable digital music player with a 5-gigabyte hard drive and a mechanical scroll wheel. Apple marketed it with the memorable idea of carrying “1,000 songs in your pocket,” combining compact hardware with easy music management through iTunes.
The iPod was not the first digital music player, but its design, storage capacity, user interface, and integration with Apple’s music ecosystem helped make portable digital music mainstream. Its success also strengthened Apple’s position before the company entered the smartphone market.
The iPod family expanded into models including the mini, nano, shuffle, and touch. Apple discontinued the final iPod touch in 2022, ending a product line that had shaped consumer technology culture for more than two decades.
