Nvidia created the GeForce line of graphics processing units, or GPUs.
GeForce began in 1999 with the GeForce 256, which Nvidia marketed as the world’s first consumer graphics processing unit. The product line initially targeted PC gaming and 3D graphics. It later became closely associated with real-time rendering, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing.
Nvidia’s GPUs became especially important for machine-learning systems because they can perform many calculations in parallel. That demand helped make Nvidia one of the world’s most valuable companies by market capitalization. AMD also produces important graphics processors, while Intel makes competing graphics hardware, but GeForce is specifically an Nvidia brand.
