Which company created the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004, in 1971?

The story behind the answer

Intel created the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004, in 1971.

Intel introduced the 4004 in November 1971. The four-bit processor was developed for the Japanese Busicom company and helped establish the idea that a computer's central processing unit could be placed on a single integrated circuit.

Intel later became one of the dominant suppliers of x86 processors for personal computers. Its history also includes important contributions to memory chips, motherboard chipsets, and data-center hardware.

The 4004 is sometimes called the first microprocessor without qualification, but that wording can depend on how “microprocessor” and “commercial” are defined. Intel's 4004 is securely recognized as the first commercially available general-purpose microprocessor.
