Which company created the Blade Battery, a long, thin lithium-iron-phosphate battery design?

The story behind the answer

BYD created the Blade Battery, a long, thin lithium-iron-phosphate battery design.

BYD introduced the Blade Battery in 2020 as a lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery intended to improve packaging efficiency and safety. Its elongated cells can be arranged closely together inside a pack, reducing the amount of unused space traditionally occupied by modules and structural components.

The battery became especially associated with BYD electric vehicles and was promoted using nail-penetration and other safety demonstrations. LFP chemistry generally has lower energy density than nickel-rich chemistries, but it is valued for thermal stability, durability, and reduced reliance on nickel and cobalt.

“Blade” describes the cell’s physical shape, not a separate battery chemistry. BYD has also supplied batteries to other vehicle manufacturers, so a vehicle using an LFP pack is not automatically using a Blade Battery. Pack design, cell format, and chemistry are related but distinct concepts.
