Google created Alphabet as its publicly traded parent company in 2015.
In August 2015, Google announced a corporate restructuring that made Alphabet Inc. the parent company of Google and several other businesses. The reorganization became effective in October 2015. Google’s core internet products, including Search, YouTube, and Android, remained within the Google subsidiary.
Larry Page became Alphabet’s chief executive, while Sergey Brin became its president. Sundar Pichai became Google’s CEO and later succeeded Page as Alphabet’s CEO in 2019. Alphabet used the structure to separate Google’s established advertising and internet businesses from newer ventures such as life sciences and autonomous-vehicle research.
Google itself had already become one of the world’s most valuable public companies through search advertising. The restructuring did not create a new operating business overnight; it changed the corporate ownership structure and allowed Alphabet to report Google and other activities separately.
