Vodafone completed the world’s largest corporate merger by value when it acquired Mannesmann in 2000.
Vodafone’s takeover of Germany’s Mannesmann was completed in June 2000 after a major international bidding battle. The transaction was valued at roughly £112 billion, making it one of the largest mergers ever recorded at the time.
The deal created a much larger telecommunications group and expanded Vodafone’s presence across European mobile markets. Mannesmann had transformed from an industrial company into a major telecommunications operator before becoming the target of Vodafone’s bid.
The transaction is relevant to market-cap history because the late-1990s and early-2000s telecommunications boom produced enormous valuations and cross-border deals. Verizon, AT&T, and Deutsche Telekom were also important telecom companies, but they did not complete this particular acquisition. Merger value and market capitalization are different measures: one describes a transaction, while the other describes the stock-market value of a listed company.
