Alibaba Group completed the largest technology IPO when it went public in 2014, raising about $25 billion.
Alibaba began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on September 19, 2014. Its initial offering raised approximately $21.8 billion, and the underwriters’ overallotment option increased the total to about $25 billion.
The Chinese company operates a large digital-commerce ecosystem. Its businesses have included online marketplaces, cloud computing, logistics, digital media, and payments-related services through associated structures.
Alibaba’s IPO is sometimes described as the largest IPO ever, but that depends on whether later overallotment shares and subsequent offerings are counted. Saudi Aramco’s 2019 IPO surpassed Alibaba’s record on the original offering totals used in most comparisons.
