Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in 2023, expanding its enterprise-software business.
Broadcom announced its agreement to acquire VMware in May 2022, and the transaction closed on November 22, 2023. VMware was known for virtualization software, which allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical computer and became important in corporate data centers.
The acquisition marked a major expansion beyond Broadcom’s traditional semiconductor operations. Broadcom had already grown through acquisitions in networking, storage, wireless communications, and infrastructure software. VMware added a large enterprise-software portfolio and an established base of business customers.
Broadcom is sometimes confused with Qualcomm or Marvell because all are major semiconductor companies. Broadcom’s business is broader: it combines semiconductor products with infrastructure software, including VMware after the acquisition.
