Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in 2023, creating a major infrastructure-software business.
Broadcom announced the approximately $69 billion transaction in May 2022 and completed it on November 22, 2023, after receiving regulatory clearances. VMware was known for virtualization software that lets organizations run multiple virtual machines on a single physical server.
The acquisition expanded Broadcom beyond semiconductors and into enterprise software. Broadcom had already built a large infrastructure-software division through acquisitions including CA Technologies and Symantec’s enterprise-security business.
Broadcom is distinct from Broadcom Corporation, which Avago Technologies acquired in 2016 before adopting the Broadcom name. The company designs chips for communications, networking, storage, and broadband systems, while VMware supplies software used in data centers and private-cloud environments.
