Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in 2023.
Broadcom announced the agreement to buy VMware in May 2022 and completed the transaction on November 22, 2023, after receiving regulatory approvals. VMware was best known for virtualization software that allows organizations to run multiple virtual computers on shared physical hardware.
Broadcom was already a major semiconductor and infrastructure-software company. Its chips are used in communications, networking, storage, and other systems. The VMware purchase expanded its software portfolio and changed the balance between its semiconductor and infrastructure-software operations.
The deal is sometimes confused with acquisitions involving Cisco or IBM because all three companies operate in enterprise technology. Broadcom’s market capitalization reflects its combination of chip businesses, software assets, recurring revenue, and investor expectations. The transaction also illustrates how a company can change its business mix without changing its stock-market identity.
