Broadcom completed its $69 billion acquisition of VMware in November 2023, becoming one of the world’s largest chip companies by market capitalization.
Broadcom is a diversified technology company whose businesses include semiconductors and infrastructure software. Its chips are used in networking, broadband, storage, wireless communications, and other electronic systems. VMware added enterprise virtualization and cloud software to that portfolio.
The acquisition was announced in 2022 and completed on November 22, 2023, after regulatory review in several jurisdictions. The transaction was one of the largest technology acquisitions ever completed.
Broadcom is often confused with the former Broadcom Corporation, which Avago Technologies acquired in 2016 before adopting the Broadcom name. The current company’s growth has come from combining semiconductor businesses with large enterprise-software operations.
