Which company commissioned Georgia O'Keeffe to paint flowers during her 1939 trip to Hawaii?

The story behind the answer

The Hawaiian Pineapple Company commissioned Georgia O'Keeffe to paint flowers during her 1939 trip to Hawaii. The company later became known as the Dole Food Company.

O'Keeffe traveled to Hawaii after receiving the commission and spent about nine weeks there. The assignment was connected to the company's advertising and promotional interests, but O'Keeffe did not simply produce botanical illustrations on demand. She painted tropical plants, flowers, landscapes, and other subjects in her own highly individual style.

The trip produced works featuring subjects such as banana flowers, papayas, and heliconias. O'Keeffe later recalled that she had been asked to paint a pineapple, but she did not do so during the trip; the company eventually sent one to her in New York, where she painted it.

The Hawaii paintings broadened her visual vocabulary beyond the Southwest. They are also a useful reminder that O'Keeffe's career included commercial commissions alongside gallery exhibitions and museum recognition.
