Which company commissioned Georgia O'Keeffe to make paintings after her 1939 trip to Hawaii?
Answer
Hawaiian Pineapple Company
Answer
Hawaiian Pineapple Company
The Hawaiian Pineapple Company commissioned Georgia O'Keeffe to make paintings after her 1939 trip to Hawaii.
The company invited O'Keeffe to create images for an advertising campaign. During her visit, she traveled through parts of the Hawaiian Islands and painted tropical plants, flowers, waterfalls, and other subjects. The commission produced a body of work that differed from the New Mexico scenes for which she was already becoming well known.
The company later became associated with the Dole brand, which explains a common naming mix-up. Dole was not the company’s name at the time of O'Keeffe’s commission. The trip is also sometimes remembered only for pineapple imagery, although O'Keeffe made many paintings of Hawaiian landscapes and vegetation. In 1940, she returned to Hawaii with the completed works and continued developing her own artistic direction rather than simply producing commercial illustrations.
